How does solar work?

Solar panels work by converting sunlight into electricity through a process called the photovoltaic effect.

HOW DOES A PANEL ACTUALLY WORK?

  • Sunlight hits the solar panels, which are made up of photovoltaic cells. These cells are typically made of silicon and have a positive and negative layer.

  • When sunlight hits the cells, it excites the electrons in the silicon, causing them to move and create an electric current.

  • This electric current is then captured by metal conductive plates on the solar panel and is sent through wires to an inverter, which converts the direct current (DC) electricity into alternating current (AC) electricity that can be used to power homes and businesses.

  • The electricity produced by the solar panels can either be used immediately or stored in batteries for later use.

  • Overall, solar panels work by harnessing the energy from sunlight and converting it into usable electricity through the photovoltaic effect.

FAQs

  • Solar is not right for everyone’s property and there are many variables to take into consideration. When we perform our onsite cost-free site visit, we will assess each item in detail and present it clearly. Our ultimate goal is leaving you as informed as possible so you can feel confident through the entire process.

  • While direct sunlight maximizes solar energy production, solar panels can still generate electricity on cloudy days. Energy values will be lower due to refraction from the clouds, however energy will still be produced on cloudy and even rainy days.

  • The cost of solar panels has decreased significantly over the years due to advancements in technology and increased production. Additionally, there are various financing options, incentives, and tax credits available that can make solar energy more affordable for homeowners and businesses.

  • Solar panels are relatively low maintenance. They typically require occasional cleaning to remove dirt and debris, and inspections to ensure they are functioning properly. However, modern solar panels are designed to withstand various weather conditions and are durable enough to last for decades with minimal maintenance.

Solar incentives

Understanding the incentives associated with purchasing a solar energy system is crucial. These incentives can allow for you to make an investment that will benefit you now and far into the future.

Incentives can be used cumulatively and helps make solar more accessible to more individuals. Tax liability is needed to ultimately take advantage of these incentives. If you are unable to use the tax credits the first year they can be rolled over. It is recommended that you speak with a tax professional to see if you will benefit from these tax incentives.

  • This is a federal tax credit that is 30% of the total out of pocket cost for solar.

  • This is a state grant that is directly deducted from the total cost of going solar. The current “incentive block” is set at .20 per watt. The average savings per customer is $2,500.

  • This is a state tax credit that is 25% of the total out of pocket cost for solar. This is limited to a maximum of $5,000.
